What is it actually?

Before we talk about it, let me introduce my self first. My name is Irwanbee, i work at one of great Pecast Company in Indonesia. At those company, i works as technical engineer, that’s why i know about this Precast Box Culvert.

Precast

“Precast” in Precast Box Culvert were mean that we build those box culvert not in position where we will place it. It’s not always mean that those Box Culvert must be fabricated at special factory (Precast Company), but we could make those Box Culvert aside at the exact place. You still can call this Box Culvert as ‘PRECAST”, because it were “casted” first, before we install it, then it will be called as Precast Box Culvert.

Box Culvert

As it’s name, Box Culvert have shape just like BOX. This Box were built to accept all Loads above it. If we talk about Integrated Box Culvert, all loads that works in box will be transfered into soil (ground) below it. No moment will occurs here, because of the box shape, all moment will become Internal Moment that only works at the body of Precast Box Culvert.

This condition will be extremely helpful if we compare it with conventional bridge. Conventional bridge will need abutment and deep foundation to transfer all those loads that works on it. Abutment and deep foundation will cause you much problems in some condition, especially if you got bad soil on those location.

Box Culvert Advantages

The main difference between “Precast Box Culvert” with conventional Bridge were the system to flows (transfers) load from above (road, vehicle, etc) into the ground. Conventional bridge (beam, column, foundation) will transfer all load pointed into one location. That’s why at those point (foundation) there will be a great loads that cause a great concentration of load. It will cause you much!
At Precast Box Culvert, all load will be transfered into amount of plate area that lays on the ground. It means that much soil area will be ‘try’ to adopt all those loads. Just like as Foot Plate Foundation, you will save much money from this condition.
